if barack obama win virginia i'd been hard pressed to see george alan winning the senate race. there are not that many president obama/george alan voter fopz fvote vot voters. remember we're talking about 50, 70, 110,000 votes, maybe that can make the difference in some of the places. so i think people will make a decision between you know, tim kaine and george alan but who turns out, who votes, what the composition electorate look like? it can matter the margins and the margins may be where the raise decided. one quick thing to chuck's point about people who have already voted versus people who are expected to vote for romney in the ohio poll. look, chuck and i agree on this, any political operative will tell you, we much rather have the vote already cast than well we're going to vote for you. it's the difference between somebody writing you a check and somebody saying, i'll write you a check in 26 days. i get the whole -- >> or the check's in the mail. >> i get the romney argument and they're probably right for all of the reasons chuck talked about in terps of the demographi

say that favorite is obama. today you would say the democrats are likely to keep the senate. governor romney has a very narrow path, and if he wins the presidency, that means there is a wave behind him, there is some left to him, and that will bring in a couple candidates to put them all won over. >> so you understand, charlie cook has forgotten more about the senate races than i ever knew. he is the bible in this. but of the reasons people beforehand a year ago thought the republicans were so sure is 2006 was a wave election and democrats won in a lot place where you did not expect them to win. the democrats work defending 23 seats and republicans only to end. by the nature of the math, it seems likely that the republicans would pick up seats and the democrats would lose. now i think the conventional wisdom is it is less than 50-50 that the republicans will take the senate. >> talk about the house for a moment, controlled by republicans. democrats would have to pick up a lot of the seats. >> it is a long shot. democrats needed 25 seats. put that in context, at the end of world war ii

. senator rob portman, was he a tougher debater in those practice sessions than president obama turned out to be? >> senator portman is very effective. i think president obama and i both have a good chance to describe our respective views as to how we'd do a better job. and i, frankly, think i benefited from the fact that rather than having people learn about me from ads prepared by my opposition, they got to actually hear what i would do for myself. and i think that helped me. i think the president also got to lay out his plans and people were able to make a comparison. but as for rob portman, he's a pretty effective guy. >> were you surprised by the president's performance? >> well, i actually thought he described pretty appropriately and pretty effectively his policies. i just happened to disagree with those policies. i mean, when we talked about the economy, he really is not proposing anything he hasn't talked about for the last four years, which is another stimulus, hiring more government workers, picking winners and losers in industries that he favors, raising taxes. these are ideas

to be a -- remember that when president obama became president he did have a democratic house and senate, perhaps not the 60 votes but he had, you know, the votes necessary to control things in the congress of the united states. he had some problems there as well. i mean, if i were to be critical of the president and maybe not be my place to do so, but if i were, it would be along those lines. i don't think that he has done a particularly good job of communicating with either party. i was there on the floor of the house when they were doing the obama care legislation and there was a lot of grumbling. i'm not talking about just those democrats that voted against it. there was a lot of grumbling from the other democrats that the white house had not been very flexible in terms of working things out with them. i can tell you as a moderate republican that i was at the white house and we had a session with rahm emanuel and the president told us he should communicate with us on these issues, particularly health care, and that never really happened either. i think that's a bit of a problem with this pres
